Golf is often seen as a game of precision, patience, and individual effort. While traditional stroke play challenges personal skills, the scramble format shifts the focus to teamwork, camaraderie, and enjoyment.
The scramble format has become a favorite for charity events, corporate outings, and casual rounds with friends. It’s a refreshing and accessible take on the sport, appealing to golfers of all skill levels.
I played the scramble format more in 2024 than ever before and I must confess, they were some of my more memorable rounds of golf for the whole season. Those rounds were tons of fun, relaxing, and virtually stress-free.
What is a Scramble in Golf?
In a Scramble, golfers play in teams of two to four. Each player tees off, and the team collectively chooses the best shot. From that point, all team members hit their next shots, repeating the process until the ball is holed. The team's score for each hole is based on the number of strokes it took to complete the hole from the selected positions.
The beauty of this format is the emphasis on teamwork. Beginners can lean on their more experienced teammates for tough shots, while seasoned players enjoy strategizing to optimize their team’s performance. It’s forgiving, and fun, and brings a collaborative spirit to the game.
Introducing the THG Quinte Golf Tour
The Hungry Golfer is researching the feasibility of launching the THG Quinte Golf Tour for the 2025 golf season. This would be a recreational golf tour based on the Scramble format.
Designed specifically for male and female golfers aged 55 and older, this tour aims to provide a mix of friendly competition, fun, and community spirit at different golf courses in or near the Bay of Quinte and Prince Edward County region.
More than just a fun golf event, the THG Quinte Golf Tour would spotlight the region’s rich culture by featuring post-round tastings from local food and beverage producers.
Imagine pairing a great round of golf with local wines, ciders, or craft beers along with some delicious foods. Add exciting prizes to the mix, and you have a recipe for an unforgettable experience.

Key Rules of the Scramble Format
Tee Shots: All team members hit from the same tee box.
Shot Selection: After each shot, the team decides which ball offers the best position.
Marking and Placement: A marker (e.g., a tee or coin) identifies the selected position. Other players place their balls within a specific distance, typically a club length, to play their shots.
Continuous Play: This process continues until the ball is holed.
Variations: Some Scrambles may limit how often a player’s shot can be selected or incorporate handicaps for fairness.
Why the Scramble Format Works
The Scramble format’s inclusive and strategic nature makes it perfect for events like the THG Quinte Golf Tour. Here’s why:
Teamwork and Camaraderie: Golf is transformed from a solitary pursuit into a shared adventure. Players bring different strengths to the table, whether it’s a long drive, pinpoint approach shots, or clutch putting.
Inclusivity for All Skill Levels: Beginners can contribute without the pressure of individual scoring, while experienced players can guide their team to success. This makes it ideal for golfers of varying abilities.
Speeds Up Play: A typical round can take over four hours, but Scrambles are faster since teams focus on the best ball, minimizing unnecessary strokes.
Strategic Depth: Deciding which ball to play involves weighing factors like distance, hazards, and lie quality, adding a layer of tactical decision-making.
Perfect for Social and Charity Events: The Scramble’s focus on fun and accessibility makes it a favorite for fundraisers and community-building events. Creative touches like mulligans or “buy-a-drive” options can add even more enjoyment.
Boosts Confidence: For new golfers, contributing even one good shot per hole can be rewarding. For seasoned players, leading a team to victory is equally satisfying.
